The lakes near Waxahachie, explained
Ellis County isn't lake country the way East Texas is. There's no big resort lake with marinas every mile. What it has is three very different reservoirs within easy reach: Lake Waxahachie, the small city lake southeast of town; Bardwell Lake, the Army Corps of Engineers lake between Waxahachie and Ennis; and Joe Pool Lake, the big recreation lake on the southwest edge of Dallas.
If you searched for fishing near Waxahachie, Ellis County lakes, a boat ramp near Ennis, or a lake near Dallas with a beach, this is your list. Each one fits a different kind of day, so start with the comparison below.
Which lake should you pick?
| Lake | Size | Max depth | Launch fee | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Waxahachie | 656 acres | 48 ft | Free | A quick morning on the water, crappie, kayaks and paddleboards |
| Bardwell Lake | 3,138 acres | 43 ft | $5 per vehicle (Little Mustang free) | Hybrid stripers and catfish, camping, a quieter big lake |
| Joe Pool Lake | 6,469 acres | 75 ft | Park entry, usually $7 to $20 | Beaches, rentals, a full state park day |
Lake Waxahachie: ramps, parks, and fishing
The city's own lake sits just off FM 877 southeast of town. It was impounded in 1956, covers about 656 acres, and drops to 48 feet. Texas Parks and Wildlife manages every species under statewide rules.
- What's biting: largemouth bass, channel and blue catfish, white crappie, and white bass.
- Crappie: along the face of the dam and the limestone bluffs on the east side.
- Bass: in the vegetation and around the dam.
- Catfish: worms and chicken liver, the organic baits TPWD recommends.
- White bass: they school in spring. Watch for birds diving on bait.
Holiday weekends: in 2025 the City Council voted to close the lake parks (Boat Dock, Spring, and Jetty) over Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day for safety, and Memorial Day 2026 was closed too. For Labor Day 2026 the city kept Boat Dock and Spring parks open under a new capacity plan, sunrise to 10 p.m., with no RVs or buses. Planning a holiday trip? Check the city's news page first.
Lake Waxahachie parks and ramps
Boat Dock Park
91 Lakeshore Dr., Waxahachie · about 15 min
The main city park on the lake: a boat dock and launch, bank fishing, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, shade trees, and restrooms, with 112 parking spots. Listed hours 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The water is shallow at the edge, so it's an easy kayak launch. Parks and Recreation: 469-309-4270.
Spring Park
501 Lakeshore Dr., Waxahachie · about 10 min
A five-acre neighborhood park on the South Prong arm with fishing, a launch for kayaks and canoes, covered shelters, and restrooms. 71 parking spots.
Jetty Park
Off Lakeshore Dr., near the dam · about 15 min
Several spots to get into the water to paddleboard, swim, or fish, plus shade and grills. Visitors say the city has been adding a playground and parking.
City Ramp A, north shore
Lakeshore Dr. near the dam, off FM 877
From Waxahachie, take FM 877 southeast about a mile and turn onto Lakeshore Drive. Parking for about 20 vehicles. Open year-round, subject to water level.
City Ramps B and C
Lakeshore Dr., about 1/2 and 3/4 mile past the turn
Small lots, about five vehicles each. Ramp C is the best choice when the lake is low, which it is this fall.
Bardwell Lake: boat ramps, fees, camping, and fishing
The Corps of Engineers built Bardwell in 1965. It covers 3,138 acres, reaches 43 feet, and sits along Texas 34 between Waxahachie and Ennis. TPWD calls its access “very good,” with five public areas.
- What's biting: largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, catfish, crappie, white bass, and sunfish.
- Hybrid stripers: the most commonly stocked fish in the lake; TPWD's latest survey found them relatively abundant thanks to extra stocking.
- Catfish: blue and channel cats are abundant, and the Corps says catfishing is usually excellent, especially when the lake is slowly rising.
- Crappie: white crappie are abundant and fat. Try under the Highway 34 bridge, and up Waxahachie and Mustang creeks during the spawn.
- Bass: fewer than other lakes because there's little shoreline cover; work the hydrilla north of the Highway 34 bridge and the face of the dam.
- Baits: live bait for catfish and crappie, noisy lures for white bass and hybrids.
- Off limits: below the dam intake tower and the old marina.
Before you go: day use is $5 per vehicle at High View, Mott, and Love parks, and the parks no longer take cash. High View Marina is permanently closed, so there's no fuel or rental on the lake. There are no designated swim beaches or lifeguards.

- Special rule: a slot length limit on largemouth bass that differs from statewide rules.
- Crappie: under the bridges on both arms of the lake, and on the buoy-marked brush piles the Corps sinks as fish attractors.

Where to stay near Bardwell Lake and Lake Waxahachie
Looking for lodging near Bardwell Lake, a place to stay with boat parking, or an Airbnb near Lake Waxahachie? Your options are a Corps campsite, a hotel in Waxahachie or Ennis, or a vacation rental like ours. Here's an honest comparison:
| The Waxahachie Tiny Home | Typical hotel room | Corps campsite | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | One home, split by the group | Per room, per night | $28 to $30 a night |
| Sleeps | 6 to 7 | Usually 2 to 4 | Whatever you bring |
| Boat trailer | Room on the property, with approval | Often no room | At your site |
| Kitchen | Full kitchen for the fish fry | Usually none | Camp cooking |
| Laundry | Washer and dryer | Usually shared or none | No |
| Beds and AC | Real beds, heating and AC | Yes | Bring your own |
| Distance to the water | 15 to 25 minutes | Varies | Steps away |
The honest take: if you want to wake up at the ramp, book a Corps campsite. If you want real beds, AC, a kitchen to cook the catch, and a safe place to park the boat, that's where we come in.
Who it works for
- Fishing crews. A queen bed downstairs, two queen air mattresses in the loft, and a sofa. Up to 7 overnight, all on the booking.
- Families. A beach day at Joe Pool, a paddle at Lake Waxahachie, and a quiet house with a washer for wet towels.
- Dog owners. Dogs welcome with approval; see our pet-friendly guide.
- Work crews with a boat on the side. See crew housing and trailer parking.
Send your trailer size. When you book on VRBO or Airbnb, message us the length and width of your boat and trailer and we'll measure the spot before you arrive.
What to bring
- A card, not cash, for Bardwell's $5 fee.
- Your fishing license on your phone, and boater education card if you were born on or after September 1, 1993.
- Life jackets for everyone; kids under 13 must wear one underway.
- Sunscreen, a hat, and polarized sunglasses. There's little shade on the water.
- Water shoes. Rocky banks and broken glass turn up at the bank-fishing spots.
- Ice and a big cooler. Buc-ee's and Walmart are the easy stops.
- A towel and a drain plug wrench. You'll be draining before you leave.
Mistakes to avoid
- Showing up at Bardwell with only cash. The parks are card only.
- Planning a day at Waxahachie Creek Park. It's for campers with reservations only.
- Counting on fuel or rentals at Bardwell. The marina is closed.
- Expecting a beach at Bardwell. There isn't a designated one. Go to Joe Pool.
- Planning a Lake Waxahachie trip on a summer holiday weekend without checking whether the parks are open.
- Hitting Cedar Hill on a summer Saturday without a reserved pass. It fills.
- Keeping a bass at Joe Pool without checking the slot limit.
- Leaving the lake with water in the livewell. It's against Texas law.
The honest take
None of these lakes is a destination on its own the way Lake Fork or Texoma is. Lake Waxahachie is small and low this fall, Bardwell's bass fishing is only fair, and Joe Pool gets crowded. But together they cover almost any kind of lake day within 40 minutes, from a sunrise crappie trip to a beach afternoon with the kids, and the catfish and hybrids at Bardwell are genuinely good. Pair them with a festival, a race, or a quiet weekend and they're a great bonus.

$5 per vehicle for day use at High View, Mott, and Love parks, and the parks no longer take cash. Little Mustang Creek Park is free. Waxahachie Creek Park is for campers with reservations only.

Is High View Marina at Bardwell Lake open?
No. The Corps lists it as permanently closed, so there's no fuel or rental on the lake. Fill up in Ennis on the way.
Can you camp at Bardwell Lake?
Yes. High View, Mott, and Waxahachie Creek parks have water and electric sites for $28 a night (30 amp) or $30 (50 amp), reserved on Recreation.gov. The limit is 14 nights in any 30 days.
What is the best lake near Waxahachie for crappie?

Lynn Creek Marina on Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie is the closest, about 40 minutes away. For kayaks on the Walnut Creek paddling trail, outfitters like Flatwater Kayak and Paddle Bound deliver.

Do I have to drain my boat when I leave a Texas lake?
Yes. Texas law requires draining all water from the boat, including the engine, bilge, livewells, and bait buckets, before leaving any public freshwater lake. It's to stop zebra mussels.
Can I park my boat trailer at the tiny home?
Yes, with prior approval. Send us the trailer's length and width and we'll measure the spot before you arrive.
Where can I buy minnows near Waxahachie?
Sammy's Mini Mart on W. Main St. in Waxahachie sells bait and minnows, and the Bardwell Food Market in Bardwell is the closest bait stop to the lake.
