Traveling to Waxahachie for a funeral

Funeral homes and cemeteries, Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, florists, a meal for the family, and a quiet place to rest.

Plan my tripSee every event on your dates, from festivals and football to Christmas lights.

We're sorry you're making this trip. When you're coming in for a funeral, you need a few practical things fast: where the service is, how far everything is, where to send flowers, where the family can eat together, and somewhere quiet to rest at the end of a long day.

We're a family who hosts a small house on farmland just outside Waxahachie, and we put this page together to help. It covers the funeral homes and cemeteries in and around town, Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery for veterans, florists, places for a family meal, death certificates, and where to stay. Restaurants and florists we mention were rated 4.3 stars or higher on Google when we checked; funeral homes and cemeteries are listed simply as places where services are held.

Full rules are on the cemetery's VA page.

Death certificates in Ellis County

If you're the one handling the estate, you'll need certified copies of the death certificate for banks, insurance, and benefits. The funeral director can usually order them for you. You can also get them from the Ellis County Clerk:

  • Office: Ellis County Clerk, 109 S. Jackson St., 2nd floor, Waxahachie, TX 75165. Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (972) 825-5070.
  • Cost: $21 for the first certified copy and $4 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. Cards carry a 2.4% fee ($2 minimum), and personal checks aren't accepted.
  • Who can order: the registrant or an immediate family member. Others need legal documentation showing a direct interest in the record.
  • By mail: send the county's application with a copy of your photo ID, a notarized sworn statement, and a cashier's check or money order to Ellis County Clerk, P.O. Box 250, Waxahachie, TX 75168.

Ask for more copies than you think you need. Each additional copy costs much less when ordered at the same time as the first.

Getting here and getting around

  • Flying in: Dallas Love Field is about 50 minutes from our house and DFW Airport about an hour, without traffic. I-35E through Dallas backs up at rush hour, so leave extra time.
  • Downtown parking is free: about 1,000 spaces on the street, in public lots, and in the three-level garage at 205 E. Jefferson St.
  • Processions: if you're not in one, give it room and don't cut into the line.
  • Late arrivals: if your flight lands at night, a place with self check-in saves a stop at a front desk.

Where to stay

Waxahachie's best-rated hotels, when we checked, were Fairfield by Marriott and Residence Inn (both 4.4) and Holiday Inn Express & Suites (4.3). Residence Inn takes dogs. Every hotel, with pet policies and longer-stay options, is in our where to stay guide.

The Waxahachie Tiny Home

A quiet place for the family to rest.

Sleeps up to 7
  • Stay together: a queen bed on the main floor, two queen air mattresses in the loft, and a sofa that sleeps one.
  • Arrive any hour: self check-in with a lockbox, so a late flight is fine.
  • Simple meals: a full kitchen, plus UberEats and DoorDash delivery to the door.
  • Laundry: a full-size washer and dryer for travel clothes.
  • Quiet: a covered porch over open farmland, 8 to 10 minutes from the funeral homes in town.
  • The family dog: welcome with prior approval and a small pet fee.
  • Longer stays: up to 28 nights per booking, for the family member who stays on to settle things.

One gentle note: the house is for up to 7 overnight guests, and we don't allow outside visitors, so plan family gatherings at a restaurant, a church, or a relative's home. Contact us, or check our dates on VRBO.
